Educational requirements

The following requirements must be met to accommodate the CPA test in Virginia. All requirements are also explained in the manual of Vboa.

Exam candidates must receive from one or more accredited institutions:

• at least 120 semester hours of education
• Baccalaureate or higher degree with a balancing concentration or equivalent

a billing concentration or equivalent consists of:

• 24 semester hours of accounting courses on the introductory / fundamental level: including courses for examination, financial accounting, management / cost accounting and taxation
• 24 semester hours Business courses: not more than six semester hours, which can be considered as balance sheet courses of the upper level

The course number or the name does not always dictate whether a course is considered as a preliminary or basic accounting price. Set the total number of quarterly hours for quarterly hours by 1.5 to calculate the exact semester hours.

The VBAA accepts each course that is a passport / failed as long as the student earned semester hours for the successful completion of the course. The finished course must be on an official transcript from a correspondingly recognized university, a college or community college.

Core Accounting Courses

Course forms required are:

• Financial courses that meet this requirement are not limited to: Intermediate Accounting, Financial Statement Analysis, Intermediate Accounting I and II

Examples of other accounting courses accepted on accounting needs are not limited to:

• Federal Taxation
• Accounting Information Systems
• Government / non-profit accounting

• government bookkeeping and reporting

Business Courses

Business course examples accepted in the direction of the company requirement:

• Computer Information Systems

Examples of other business courses accepted on the business requirement are not limited to:

• Business Law
• Trade Act
• Legal environment of the business
• Organizational behavior
• Financial Management
• Investments
• Insurance
• Personal financial planning

Not more than six semester hours of accounting courses (without introductory / basic billing classes) can be viewed as business courses in order to meet the 48 minimum number of semester hours for accounting concentration or equivalent.

Candidates are prompted to use the educational manual to evaluate the training required to qualify the CPA test.

Accredited institutions

The VBOA recognizes institutions accredited by one of the following accreditation agencies or their successors:

The Accreditation Agency website should list accredited institutions. Contact an unelisted institution directly to determine if it is accredited by one of the recognized accreditation agencies. Many institutions list the accreditation on the back of their transcripts.

Uncredited institutions

The VBOA is considered in a degree or course work in an unaccepted institution as soon as the degree or course work is evaluated by an educational assessment company.

Education outside the United States

The VBOA will consider a degree or a course work, which can be reached in an uncredined institution outside the United States as soon as the degree or course work is evaluated by an educational assessment company.

Online Institutions

The VBOA recognizes an online institution if it is accredited by one of the recognized accreditation agencies.
